The environment of Therapy House offers therapeutic interactions, involving a variety of animals, in efforts to enhance the lives of our visitors. Our hopes in servicing the community, whether we assist those who struggles with physical, mental, emotional, developmental conditions or those who enjoy being surrounded by animals, is to enhance senses of comfort, acceptance, calmness and to reduce anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

Historically, a strong bond between animals and people exists. Numerous bodies of research have identified interactions between animals and people have been proven to be highly effective in improving mental, physical, social, and emotional functioning. Many different animals can be used in therapy, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, rabbits, birds, and many others. Animal assisted interactions can take place individually or in groups. Much more than simply spending time with an animal, animal assisted therapy involves specific therapeutic goals, strategies, and outcomes measures. Therapeutic experiences can include walking, brushing, petting, feeding, and caring for an animal as well as processing the experience of trying to achieve a given task.

Animals are accepting, non-threatening, and non-judgemental, making it easier for people to open up. Because many children and adults enjoy working with animals, animal assisted therapy can be particularly beneficial for people who are resistant to treatment or have difficulty accessing their emotions or expressing themselves in more traditional forms of therapy. Animals can also provide a distraction from pain and anxiety and serve as a source of pleasure, happiness, fun, and entertainment.
